Breaking Boundaries: A Female Perspective on starting a Jiu-Jitsu journey!
Embarking on a journey into the world of Brazilian Jiujitsu (BJJ) can be a daunting prospect for anyone, let alone for a woman stepping into what’s often perceived as a male-dominated arena. But for Dani, age 34, the decision to join Gracie Barra Salisbury Jiujitsu wasn’t just about conquering fears; it was about embracing a new path of empowerment and self-discovery.
Dani’s journey began in January 2024, prompted by her daughter’s enrollment in the kids’ classes. Despite initial reservations, fueled by apprehensions of being surrounded by strangers, predominantly men, Dani decided to take the plunge. “I like to get out of my comfort zone,” she shares, “so it was the anxiety that made me want to try it so I could face a fear.”
Having dabbled in activities like running, yoga, Pilates, and weight training, Dani had preconceived notions about BJJ, expecting it to be more aggressive and painful. However, her perceptions swiftly transformed upon stepping onto the mats of Gracie Barra Salisbury. “It’s only as aggressive as you want it to be,” she explains. “Especially just starting out, it doesn’t have to be super aggressive or painful if you have good teammates and good coaches.”
What sets Gracie Barra Salisbury apart, according to Dani, is its culture of respect and consideration. She emphasizes the welcoming atmosphere and the absence of sexism or misogyny, a rarity in male-dominated environments. “I’ve always felt valued and respected equally,” she affirms.
To those contemplating their own journey into BJJ, Dani’s advice is simple yet profound: “Don’t wait for the perfect time to start. Just do it. Go for a trial session. What have you got to lose? If you’re nervous – great! It will be the biggest thrill to go in feeling a bit scared and come out feeling amazing!”
Describing the impact of BJJ in three words – energized, bouncy, and relaxed – Dani’s experience transcends mere physical activity. “Every session brings so much value to my week,” she enthuses. “I’m totally hooked!”
Gracie Barra Salisbury Jiu-Jitsu isn’t just a sports club; it’s a community and a lifestyle where everyone is considered equal, irrespective of age, gender, abilities, or fitness levels. Dani’s journey serves as a testament to the transformative power of BJJ, a journey of empowerment, camaraderie, and self-discovery.
